IMPORTANT THOUGHTS FROM

Mountainside Middle School

Things People Appreciate

Opportunities for advanced math classes and Honors english classes

We are challenging students in these two areas.

Pride program

Great to see recognition for acting responsible.

Powerschool

I do like that we can access this anytime and see where our student stands. Also, that they can access it for the same. It brings another level of responsibility to the student. Kids these days need more of that.

Excellent music, art, and athletic programs

These programs help a child learn a great deal about themselves and have a positive impact on their core subjects too.

Mountainside has great teachers

My kids have really liked most of their teachers quite a bit and have always felt like they could get the help they needed in order to succeed.

Things to Improve

Kids should have a teacher assigned to them for conferences who knows them

Parents want to know how their kids are doing at school from someone who has actually spent some time with them in the classroom. The student led conferences are not productive. I don't like asking a question and having the person assigned to my child not able to answer it because they don't know.

Continue to focus on the students

The school systems as a whole tend to focus on standardized tests, instead of focusing on the best education for the students. Our students need to have an education that focuses more on advancements in science, mathematics, and technology.

More electives

I would like to see elective classes offered that were more introductory to high school courses. Art is great, but what about an introduction to engineering, foreign languages, and Bio-med? That way, students could see if the classes offered at the high school might be of interest to them.

The ability to choose electives

If a student doesn't what to be in choir or band, it's a crap shoot as to which electives they will get. It would be nice for them to be able to pick specifically which ones they want. Also, with all the typing and computer work required, keyboarding should be required, not an elective.

Communication

I feel that I am not always in the loop as to what is happening in the school. I check the website, Powerschool and Schoology but still do not feel connected.

Other Thoughts Shared

I am not crazy about Common Core or the amount of testing done in Mead

Testing is for sure a pet peave of mine! I'd rather have my child engaged in a fascinating book, current events discussion, science experiment, real world math applications, playing with clay, or blowing her horn, than preparing for another test.

Dress code

I don't always see the dress code being enforced. I know that this is a sensitive matter, but many girls are not dressed within the dress code.

Grateful parent

I am so grateful for my children to attend such a clean, advanced, and wonderful school that is top notch!

Access time

I like the idea of having this opportunity to enable the students to get help in areas that they feel they need, rather than just a few minutes here and there with the busy schedules teachers endure. Great idea on this!

Teacher's expectations of technology access

Not every student has access to extra science supplies or wifi and printers. It shouldn't be assumed that they do.
