IMPORTANT THOUGHTS FROM

Farwell Elementary School

Things People Appreciate

Enriching environment

The Mead School District, specifically Farwell Elementary School, excels at celebrating students. Students are validated and challenged to be higher level thinkers. Opportunities are provided to have fun while learning about holidays and expanding knowledge of different cultures.

Things going well include communication

I appreciate the weekly emails from my kid's teachers. They are informative about school activities as well as specific classroom activities. The teachers are also very willing to respond timely to emails. I have also received emails from the office sharing school information.

Teachers

My kids love their teachers who have been great and made my children's learning experience a positive one.

Community

There is a great sense of community among the students at Farwell. I appreciate that all of the students seem to be supportive of one another. It makes for a wonderful learning environment.

Arts, music and sports

Fantastic that the district continues to offer these to the students. It would be great to see it continue and the possibility of more available.

Things to Improve

Decrease classroom sizes by increasing the number of classes and teachers

Research supports smaller classrooms. The increase in the number of houses, apartments, and condos in the Mead School District, continue to increase the number of students into the schools. It is evident with the number of kids bused between schools that there are not enough classrooms.

Testing

Well, you have heard it all. Wish teachers could just teach, not teach to pass a test.

Emotional intelligence

I think that it is very important to equip our children with not just the academic tools to succeed, but also the emotional intelligence piece as well. What tools are we able to give our children that might be considered non-traditional in learning, but essential for life in the real world?

Continue the teacher support

It is so great that there is time set aside for teachers to collaborate. It makes the Farwell staff strong.

Pledge of Allegiance

We are new to the district. I'm not sure if the whole district does not say the pledge of allegiance in school but I'm disappointed that the kids in Farwell don't have the chance to say it. For me, that is a really important daily reminder of patriotism, and the blessing it is to live in this country.

Other Thoughts Shared

Great communication

I really appreciate all of the effort that the teachers, school, and district make to communicate with parents about their child, new programs and successes around the district.

Bus ride

I feel like the bus drivers need more support on the bus rides, especially the overflow bus to Five Mile Prairie in the morning and afternoon. Both of my children have expressed concern over their personal safety and the troubling behaviors of the older students.

Volunteering

I like the school's attitude on having parent helpers. It is a great way for parents to see how the class is run so we can reinforce the teachings at home.

Helpfulness

Anytime I have needed help from teachers or the school staff I have received it. It is always with a positive attitude and that is nice because it encourages me to want to be more involved.

Variety of extracurricular activities

I love that kids in grades 4-6 can participate in sports! I love that there are real world activities like the garden, composting, worm bins, hands-on science, math clubs, etc. to support kids.
