IMPORTANT THOUGHTS FROM

Prairie View Elementary School

Your Concerns

Too much focus on testing

As a new parent to this district I have yet to learn how much emphasis is placed on testing instead of learning. The district I came from saw very frustrated teachers, parents, and children with that process, and wished they were able to move the focus.

Having a math program that parents need instruction to assist and support

children is inappropriate. For children that struggle with math, it takes a village to support them. It appears that concerns are going on deaf ears.

Resources for children at all levels

I would like to know that children of all academic abilities (both above and below average) are provided with level-appropriate and challenging work. For instance, for children who function above average, MORE work isn't necessarily the answer, but work that challenges them may be more helpful.

Need more individualized learning opportunities

I would love to see students have the opportunity to have more of an individual track to learn and grow at their own pace and to pursue subjects of interest to them within certain boundaries.

Our schools are overcrowded

Overcrowded schools decrease the district's ability to provide top quality educational opportunities. Time in "specials" classes are decreased to accommodate all students, higher class size numbers decrease teachers' ability to provide one-on-one instruction.

You Appreciate

Dedicated teachers at Prairie View

There are wonderful teachers at Prairie View Elementary. I appreciate that they are so dedicated and seem to truly love what they do.

I know my children are safe and cared for at their schools.

Physical education

PE teaches personal strength and teaches our kids to work as a team.

Flexible homework assignments

I appreciate teachers who are considering new models of homework. Monthly homework assignments that can work around busy schedules is much appreciated.

Technology

Prairie View has ample opportunity for students to use computers. Also, teachers do a good job researching programs to purchase that students can use at home to supplement their work at school.

Learning Opportunities

More teaching of STEM in the classroom.

Art specialists at all elementary schools and full time counselors

Arts are vital for our students. Exploring right brain activities is a great opportunity for students. It could be a planning period easily implemented. Too much emphasis and money spent on SBAC.

Would like elementary students to do code.org and robotics

to keep interested in school.

Language

We are in a global economy. The best time to learn languages is when students are younger and brain-wired to soak up foreign languages. This is completely missing, and it would be great to see something, although I know often the school is struggling to teach the basics effectively.

I would like to see our students more community oriented

It would be nice if the students had more access to opportunities to give back and to be involved in our community as well as our city as a whole.
