IMPORTANT THOUGHTS FROM

North Star School

Your Concerns

Restricted by space and resources

There is no set office space, and the library is small and difficult to organize, again because of the transient properties of the school set up. Dedicated space for a library, with a check in desk instead of sharing a desk/area with the office, would make resources more accessible to families.

I am concerned that we have to follow Common Care standards

It doesn't allow my child to think outside of the box and therefore he might not test well.

I'm concerned that I might be required to use "pc" curriculum

I would like to continue to be in charge of my child's curriculum both now and in the future.

You Appreciate

Math online

My child can work at his own pace and learn independently.

Flexibility

The staff is very flexible and works with families to create a learning plan that works best for the individual student.

Small groups

Feel like small groups are the best. Kids don't feel as embarrassed to ask questions.

The mentor teachers offer great support for parents

My questions and concerns are always promptly addressed. I receive helpful recommendations on curriculum, and the mentor teachers understand different learning styles and the needs associated with them.

The focus on STEM electives is great

I appreciate how many STEM-focused classes are offered. The teachers and topics are creative and engaging.

Learning Opportunities

Home economics

I would like to see actual home economics/kitchen science, sewing, car maintenance, budgeting (maybe these are offered, but I haven't been here long enough).

More hands on, less books.

Financial fitness

It would be nice for students to learn simple money management skills (preferably geared toward older students). Topics to cover could include budgeting, saving, balancing a checkbook, credit, and a brief overview on filing taxes.

Dedicated classrooms

Many students at North Star take classes in a common area which is loud and busy. A larger space or dedicated classroom area would be better for learning.

A sensory-focused PE class or art class

This class could focus on sensory-based play and activities.
