IMPORTANT THOUGHTS FROM

Farwell Elementary School

Your Concerns

Learning concerns

I have been very impressed with the education my daughter has been receiving in the Mead School District. My only concern surrounding learning opportunities would be maintaining smaller class sizes. With the large influx of building in our area I am concerned about how it will impact our children.

There needs to be an art education element at the elementary level

Creativity is essential for good mind growth and lends opportunity to expand the knowledge base.

Curriculum changes

If the curriculum changes every 5 years, a student will need to adjust to new content three times throughout their time in our district, which can create holes in their learning. For example, social studies topics change and students never learn state capitals, but learn ancient worlds twice.

Buddy Bench and kindness

I would love to see a Buddy Bench put in on the playground for kids who need someone to play with. Any type of character education for the kids in anti-bullying and kindness, especially for those kids who are considered "different", would be great!

Think there should be more emphasis on spelling in all grades

I know in this day of electronics everything is spellcheck, but I think classes through 6th grade need to bring back spelling correctness.

You Appreciate

I appreciate the caring, cooperative people implementing quality content.

Reading emphasis

I have been happy with the emphasis on reading. Becoming good readers helps children be better learners.

Technology

I like that the district has been working to bring technology to every classroom and give the kids more opportunities to use it since it will be a huge part of their lives as adults.

STEM Summer camp

This was a wonderful opportunity for my student. He enjoyed it and looks forward to more opportunities like it in the future. My younger son hopes 4th graders will be able to join in next summer as they were the late addition last summer.

The extracurriculars - band, choir, orchestra, and sports are exceptional

Students need creative, challenging outlets.

Learning Opportunities

Book Club or reading and writing outside the classroom

We have Math is Cool; it would be cool to see something offered that allows the kids to grow in their reading and writing skills.

Health and nutrition starting in 1st grade

Obesity starts at a young age, and in this day and age there is more and more eating on the run, busy life schedules and more electronics occupying minds and time of everyone.

I would love to see a basics of life class

I think most things should be taught at home, however positive reinforcement from an outside source is beneficial. I would love to see manners, etiquette, setting a table, saving money and other important actual life practices would be wonderful!

Increase opportunities for Highly Capable

For a city the size of Spokane, we should be modeling Highly Capable offerings off of what's working in other large cities such as the Seattle metropolitan area, such as full immersion classrooms on site starting in kindergarten.

Foreign language options.
