IMPORTANT THOUGHTS FROM

Brentwood Elementary School

Your Concerns

Continued learning of cursive

I think that this is a very important skill for kids to have, particularly when looking at historical documents, and the ability to sign one's name. I am happy this was introduced in third grade, and hope that it continues to be taught to the kids as an important learning tool.

I would like more advanced programs for students already meeting standards

Students who already meet state and districts standards need to be challenged to meet even higher standards (but not just more repetition or basic standards; they need opportunities for creative growth). Students need these opportunities at younger grade levels.

STEM education early

More science and technology early on.

We need to let teachers have the freedom to differentiate for all students

Purchased curricula are great roadmaps. They should be used. However, in some cases, "teach a program with fidelity" is being interpreted as teachers can't use supplemental material to enrich learning for students working above grade level, or to re-teach students who are struggling to master concepts.

I am concerned about exclusive Common Core math teaching skills

Although the Common Core method is particularly helpful to some types of learners, I am concerned that it utilizes unnecessary tediousness for some students who understand and excel in math concepts in the traditional method. It would be nice if it were used as an option, not the option.

You Appreciate

Brentwood is a happy place to be

The students and staff project happiness, and then it spreads more happiness!

Afterschool sports for 5th-6th grade

I appreciate the low cost afterschool sports programs. I hope in the future some could be considered in the arts area for kids that have interest.

Patriotism

I appreciate that students are encouraged to learn the star spangled banner and cite the pledge daily.

Teachers

I think Brentwood has a lot of wonderful teachers who go the extra mile to help students have an enriched learning environment.

Movement within grade level between teachers

I love that the teachers work together to group students into smaller groups in order to help the learning process in math and reading!

Learning Opportunities

Artistic type afterschool classes

Art, drama, choir, dance, more instrument trial classes.

Tutoring and more art

They are both important and would love to see it.

Language immersion

America is so diverse. Speaking a second language is so valuable. When these kids are young, they pick up language so quickly! It also REALLY challenges those who are very bright!

STEAM, typing and other tech programs, foreign language

STEAM, typing and other tech programs, foreign language.

Life skills

Concepts and ideas that would be beneficial throughout life would be appreciated, such as classes on understanding and coping with mental illness, anxiety, stress, etc., and how to help others that experience these. Study skills and class preparedness would also be helpful.
