Continued learning of cursive
I think that this is a very important skill for kids to have, particularly when looking at historical documents, and the ability to sign one's name. I am happy this was introduced in third grade, and hope that it continues to be taught to the kids as an important learning tool.
I would like more advanced programs for students already meeting standards
Students who already meet state and districts standards need to be challenged to meet even higher standards (but not just more repetition or basic standards; they need opportunities for creative growth). Students need these opportunities at younger grade levels.
STEM education early
More science and technology early on.
We need to let teachers have the freedom to differentiate for all students
Purchased curricula are great roadmaps. They should be used. However, in some cases, "teach a program with fidelity" is being interpreted as teachers can't use supplemental material to enrich learning for students working above grade level, or to re-teach students who are struggling to master concepts.
I am concerned about exclusive Common Core math teaching skills
Although the Common Core method is particularly helpful to some types of learners, I am concerned that it utilizes unnecessary tediousness for some students who understand and excel in math concepts in the traditional method. It would be nice if it were used as an option, not the option.
